F9 reasoning: Christ's saving death

Reasoning steps: Christ’s saving death

Verdicts: F9 · Christ’s saving death. Method: conventions, scoring and proximity eras. Scripture is the primary measure; fathers are weighed by era (Era I to c. 150 = 1.0, II = 0.8, III = 0.6, IV = 0.4).

F09.1: Did Christ’s death save?

Step F09.1.1: Scripture

1 Cor 15:3: ‘Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures’, as of first importance. Mark 10:45 (a ransom for many); Rom 5:8–10 (justified by his blood, reconciled by his death); 1 Pet 3:18.

Step F09.1.2: Patristic evidence

Clement (Era I): Christ’s blood ‘shed for our salvation’. Ignatius: ‘He suffered all these things for our sakes, that we might be saved’. Diognetus: God ‘gave His own Son as a ransom for us, the holy One for transgressors’. Irenaeus: ‘redeeming us by His own blood’. Sources: clement-of-rome-f09-s1 · ignatius-f09-s1 · diognetus-f09-s1 · irenaeus-f09-s1.

Step F09.1.3: Weighing decision

Unanimous from Era I. Verdict: consensus.

  • Confidence: High.

Step F09.1.4: Source-proximity weighing

  • Scripture (benchmark): Christ’s death ‘for our sins’ is ‘of first importance’ (1 Cor 15:3) and is a ransom and reconciliation (Mark 10:45; Rom 5:10). (Scripture confidence: high)
  • Assessment: Scripture and Era I agree; all nine confess it.

F09.2: Was Christ’s sacrifice once for all and fully sufficient?

Step F09.2.1: Scripture

Heb 7:27; 9:26–28 (‘once for all at the end of the ages’); 10:10–14 (‘by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified’); 1 John 2:2.

Step F09.2.2: Patristic evidence

Chrysostom (Era III) on Hebrews 10: ‘Do not we offer every day? We offer indeed, but making a remembrance of His death, and this [remembrance] is one and not many’. Sources: chrysostom-f09-s1.

Step F09.2.3: Weighing decision

The fathers treat the cross as the one sufficient sacrifice; even those who call the Eucharist a sacrifice say it is one with it, not a repetition. Verdict: consensus. Whether the Eucharist is itself sacrificial is S05.

  • Confidence: High.

Step F09.2.4: Source-proximity weighing

  • Scripture (benchmark): ‘By a single offering he has perfected for all time’ (Heb 10:14). (Scripture confidence: high)
  • Assessment: Scripture and Era III agree; all nine affirm the cross’s sufficiency. The difference over the Mass is scored at S05.

F09.3: Did Christ truly die in the flesh (real death, not apparent)?

Step F09.3.1: Scripture

Luke 23:46 and John 19:30 (he gave up his spirit); John 19:33–34 (already dead; blood and water from his side); 1 Cor 15:3–4 (died, was buried, raised); Phil 2:8 (obedient unto death, even death on a cross). The NT treats the death as real and bodily, not a seeming.

Step F09.3.2: Patristic evidence

Ignatius (Era I), Trallians 9: Christ ‘was truly crucified, and [truly] died’. Smyrnaeans 2: ‘He suffered truly … not, as certain unbelievers maintain, that He only seemed to suffer’. Complements F03 (true humanity) by focusing on the passion itself; F09.1 asks whether that death saves. Sources: ignatius-f09-s2 · ignatius-f09-s3.

Step F09.3.3: Weighing decision

Reading A (Docetism): Christ only seemed to suffer and die. Reading B: he truly died in the flesh. B is chosen. Scripture and Era I agree; Ignatius stakes his own martyrdom on the reality of the passion.

  • Confidence: High.

Step F09.3.4: Source-proximity weighing

  • Scripture (benchmark): Luke 23:46; John 19:30–34; 1 Cor 15:3–4; Phil 2:8. (Scripture confidence: high)
  • Key sources by tier: Ignatius (T1, w 1.0). Proximity factor: 1.0.
  • Assessment: Supported by Scripture and the earliest post-apostolic witness against Docetism. All nine confess a real death in the creeds.
