F12 reasoning: Salvation by grace through faith in Christ

Reasoning steps: Salvation by grace through faith in Christ

Verdicts: F12 · Salvation by grace through faith in Christ. Shared notes and post-750 development: justification.

F12.1 (was justification/Q2): What do patristic ‘faith alone’ phrases exclude: Mosaic works, pre-baptismal works, or all works as ground?

Step F12.1.1: Scripture

ex-erga-nomou. Rom 4:4–5 and 11:6 go beyond Torah boundary markers.

Step F12.1.2: Patristic evidence

Works in general excluded: clement-of-rome-s1 (“works which we have wrought in holiness of heart”), chrysostom-s1 (“without needing works, but looking for faith only”), polycarp-s1. Mosaic ordinances in view: justin-martyr-s1, justin-martyr-s2, irenaeus-s1, ignatius-s2. ‘Faith alone’ in so many words: hilary-s1, ambrosiaster-s1, ambrosiaster-s2, basil-s1, origen-s1 (all secondary-attested). Grace precedes merit: councils-carthage-orange-s2, councils-carthage-orange-s3. Mosaic law in view: chrysostom-s4. Works precede nothing: augustine-s1 (“works do not precede justification”).

Step F12.1.3: Weighing decision

Reading A: only Mosaic or ceremonial works are excluded. Reading B: all works are excluded as the antecedent ground of initial justification, while works necessarily follow. B is chosen for Clement, Chrysostom and Augustine. A is chosen for Justin and Irenaeus, whose context is Jewish practice. For Clement the decisive point is his explicit inclusion of works done “in holiness of heart” and the Rom 6:1-style objection in 33.1. Neither of these makes sense if only ceremonies were meant. No pre-750 father uses ‘faith alone’ to settle the questions of final judgment or growth in justification. That question stays open in the sources.

  • Update (phase 9): the secondary-attested witnesses (Hilary, Ambrosiaster, Basil, Origen) all support B. Ambrosiaster on Rom 4:7–8 even excludes works of penance. They count at reduced weight. Orange canons 5 and 18 confirm B conciliarly: grace precedes both faith and merit.
  • Confidence: High for ’no works precede initial justification’. Medium on whether ‘faith alone’ also governs final judgment, which the fathers do not settle; Cyprian and Origen point the other way on post-baptismal sin.

Step F12.1.4: Source-proximity weighing

See the proximity tiers.

  • Scripture (benchmark): Rom 4:4–5 and 11:6 exclude works as the ground of acceptance. (Scripture confidence: high)
  • Key sources by tier: Clement of Rome (T1, w 1.0); Chrysostom (T3, w 0.6); Augustine (T3, w 0.6); Irenaeus (T2, w 0.8). Proximity factor: 0.75 (mean tier weight of 4 key source(s)).
  • Assessment: Strongest support is early: 1 Clem 32 (T1) and Scripture (Rom 4:4–5). Canon 24 of Trent (‘increase’ through works) and Dositheus 13’s ‘meriting’ have no T1–T2 support and no clear biblical support. Verdict unchanged.
