F16 reasoning: One holy catholic and apostolic Church

Reasoning steps: One holy catholic and apostolic Church

Verdicts: F16 · One holy catholic and apostolic Church. Method: conventions, scoring and proximity eras. Scripture is the primary measure; fathers are weighed by era (Era I to c. 150 = 1.0, II = 0.8, III = 0.6, IV = 0.4).

F16.1: One holy catholic and apostolic Church

Step F16.1.1: Scripture

Eph 4:4 (‘one body and one Spirit’); Eph 2:20 (built on the apostles and prophets); Eph 5:25–27 (Christ’s holy bride); 1 Tim 3:15 (pillar and buttress of the truth); Matt 16:18.

Step F16.1.2: Patristic evidence

Ignatius (Era I): ‘wherever Jesus Christ is, there is the Catholic Church’. Cyprian (Era III): ‘He can no longer have God for his Father, who has not the Church for his mother’. The 381 creed confesses one, holy, catholic, apostolic Church. Sources: ignatius-f16-s1 · cyprian-f16-s1 · constantinople-i-f16-s1.

Step F16.1.3: Weighing decision

All fathers confess one Church; Cyprian identifies it with the visible episcopal communion. Later Protestant confessions confess the same Church but distinguish the invisible elect from the visible church. Both readings confess F16; the visible/invisible distinction is the second-order difference. Verdict: consensus on the confession; split on its institutional sense.

  • Confidence: High (confession); medium (institutional sense).

Step F16.1.4: Source-proximity weighing

  • Scripture (benchmark): There is one body of Christ, holy and built on the apostles (Eph 2; 4; 5). Scripture uses ἐκκλησία both for local congregations and for the whole people of God. (Scripture confidence: high)
  • Assessment: Scripture and Era I support the confession. Cyprian’s strict visible identification is Era III.

F16.2: Is the visible church a mixed body of good and bad until the judgement?

Step F16.2.1: Scripture

Matt 13:24–30, 36–43 (wheat and tares grow together ‘until the harvest’); 13:47–50 (the net); 1 Cor 5:11–13 (yet judge those inside); 2 Tim 2:19–20 (vessels of honour and dishonour in a great house).

Step F16.2.2: Patristic evidence

Nicaea (Era III) receives returning Cathari (Novatianists, who claimed a pure church) on terms. Augustine (Era III), against the Donatists, reads the wheat and tares as ’the present intermingling and future separation of the good and bad’. Sources: nicaea-i-f16-s1 · augustine-f16-s1.

Step F16.2.3: Weighing decision

The fathers reject Novatianist and Donatist claims to a church of the pure, while practising discipline. Verdict: consensus (Era III) for a mixed visible church with discipline.

  • Confidence: Medium–high.

Step F16.2.4: Source-proximity weighing

  • Scripture (benchmark): The parables of the tares and the net show a mixed body until the end, while Paul requires discipline of open sin (1 Cor 5). (Scripture confidence: medium)
  • Assessment: Scripture and Era III agree; a church of visible saints only, maintained by strict separation, departs partly from both.
