S18 reasoning: Invocation of saints and Marian dogmas
Reasoning steps: Invocation of saints and Marian dogmas
Verdicts: S18 · Invocation of saints and Marian dogmas. Method: conventions, scoring and proximity eras. Scripture is the primary measure; fathers are weighed by era (Era I to c. 150 = 1.0, II = 0.8, III = 0.6, IV = 0.4).
S18.1: Invoking the saints and their intercession
Step S18.1.1: Scripture
The departed saints are a ‘cloud of witnesses’ (Heb 12:1); the martyrs under the altar cry out (Rev 6:9–10); elders offer ’the prayers of the saints’ (Rev 5:8). Believers ask one another for prayer (Jas 5:16). No text shows a believer addressing a departed saint; there is ‘one mediator’ (1 Tim 2:5).
Step S18.1.2: Patristic evidence
Martyrdom of Polycarp (Era II): Christ ‘we adore; but the martyrs … we worthily love’. Cyril (Era III): in the liturgy ‘we commemorate … Patriarchs, Prophets, Apostles, Martyrs, that at their prayers and intercessions God would receive our petition’. Sources: martyrdom-of-polycarp-s18-s1 · cyril-of-jerusalem-s18-s1.
Step S18.1.3: Weighing decision
Era II honours the martyrs without invoking them; by Era III the liturgy asks God to receive prayers through the saints’ intercession; direct invocation spreads in Era III–IV. Verdict: commemoration Era II; asking God for the saints’ intercession Era III; direct invocation later.
- Confidence: Medium.
Step S18.1.4: Source-proximity weighing
- Scripture (benchmark): Departed saints are alive and the martyrs pray (Rev 6:10), but Scripture gives no example or command to invoke them; prayer is addressed to God through the one mediator. (Scripture confidence: medium)
- Assessment: The practice is Era III onward; Scripture and Era I–II lack it. Rejecting invocation matches Scripture and Era I–II; rejecting any commemoration of saints departs from Era II.
S18.2: Mary’s perpetual virginity
Step S18.2.1: Scripture
Matt 1:25: Joseph ‘knew her not until (ἕως οὗ) she had given birth’; Jesus’ ‘brothers’ (Mark 6:3; Gal 1:19). ἕως οὗ does not by itself imply a change afterwards, and ἀδελφός can mean a relative. Scripture does not settle the question.
Step S18.2.2: Patristic evidence
Protevangelium (Era II): Joseph says ‘I have children, and I am an old man’. Jerome (Era III) against Helvidius: Scripture has ‘four kinds of brethren’, so the Lord’s brothers are kinsmen; Joseph too was a virgin. Sources: protevangelium-s18-s1 · jerome-s18-s1 · jerome-s18-s2.
Step S18.2.3: Weighing decision
From Era II a strand holds Mary remained a virgin (brothers as Joseph’s children or cousins); by Era III it is the consensus against Helvidius (Tertullian earlier treated the brothers as Mary’s children). Verdict: consensus from Era III, Era II attested.
- Confidence: Medium–high.
Step S18.2.4: Source-proximity weighing
- Scripture (benchmark): Not settled by Scripture: ‘until’ and ‘brothers’ are compatible with either view. (Scripture confidence: low)
- Assessment: Scripture is not decisive (scored as not a Scripture question). Patristic consensus by Era III.
S18.3: Immaculate Conception and bodily Assumption as dogmas
Step S18.3.1: Scripture
Luke 1:28 (κεχαριτωμένη, ‘favoured one’); Luke 1:47 (Mary calls God ‘my Saviour’); Rom 3:23. No text mentions Mary’s conception or her end.
Step S18.3.2: Patristic evidence
Augustine (Era III) exempts Mary from discussion of actual sins ‘out of honour to the Lord’, not from original sin. The Assumption first appears in 5th–6th-century Transitus narratives (Era IV), not in our verified sources. Sources: augustine-s18-s1.
Step S18.3.3: Weighing decision
Neither doctrine is attested as dogma before 750; Augustine’s text concerns actual sin. Verdict: not patristic dogma (a Dormition tradition is Era IV).
- Confidence: Medium.
Step S18.3.4: Source-proximity weighing
- Scripture (benchmark): Scripture is silent on Mary’s conception and end; Luke 1:47 ‘my Saviour’ sits awkwardly with a sinless conception but does not settle it. (Scripture confidence: medium)
- Assessment: Lacks Scripture and Era I–III support; defining them as binding dogma (1854, 1950) goes beyond both.
