S24 · Merit and good works

Whether the works of the justified merit eternal life; whether works are necessary for salvation.

Tier: Second-order (scoring weight 2). How the tiers were set: theological triage. Method: conventions. Traditions’ sources: confessional sources.

In short

Do good works earn heaven, and are they needed at all? Scripture calls eternal life a free gift (Romans 6:23) yet promises rewards and says no one will see the Lord without holiness (Hebrews 12:14). Augustine said God crowns his own gifts when he rewards our merits. Trent says the justified truly merit eternal life; Protestant confessions deny that works merit it, but agree they must follow true faith.

Overall verdict

S24.1: works done by grace are rewarded; Augustine calls them merits that are God’s gifts. Trent’s ’truly merit eternal life’ and the Protestant denial both claim him; Scripture’s ‘gift’ wording favours the Protestant formula. S24.2: works are necessary for final salvation as the fruit of living faith (Era I–III consensus); the Lutheran refusal to say ’necessary for salvation’ is the outlier in wording.
