Reasoning steps: Millennium

Verdicts: T1 · Millennium. Method: conventions, scoring and proximity eras. Scripture is the primary measure; fathers are weighed by era (Era I to c. 150 = 1.0, II = 0.8, III = 0.6, IV = 0.4).

T01.1: Millennium

Step T01.1.1: Scripture

Rev 20:4–6: the saints ‘came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years’; ’the first resurrection’. The passage is apocalyptic and its time-reference is disputed; no other text clearly teaches an earthly interregnum.

Step T01.1.2: Patristic evidence

Irenaeus (Era II), citing Papias and the elders, expects ’the times of the kingdom’ on a renewed earth. Justin (Era II): ‘I and many others are of this opinion’, but ‘many who belong to the pure and pious faith, and are true Christians, think otherwise’. Step T01.1.3: Weighing decision

Era I–II leans premillennial (Papias, Justin, Irenaeus) but Justin admits orthodox dissent; from Era III Augustine’s amillennial reading prevails. Verdict: split; early chiliasm vs later amillennialism, neither a test of orthodoxy.

  • Scripture (benchmark): Rev 20 can be read either way; Scripture gives no second clear text. (Scripture confidence: low)

T01.2: Is the ‘first resurrection’ of Rev 20:5 bodily or spiritual?

Rev 20:4–6 (’this is the first resurrection’); John 5:25 (’the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear’); Eph 2:5–6; Col 3:1.

Step T01.2.2: Patristic evidence

Augustine (Era III, City of God XX.6) reads two resurrections: ’the one the first and spiritual resurrection, which has place in this life … the other the second, which does not occur now, but in the end of the world, and which is of the body’. Step T01.2.3: Weighing decision

Era II (bodily) and Era III (spiritual) divide, as in T01.1; Augustine’s reading rests on John 5:25. Verdict: open.
