AFT S1: Anathemas against Origen 1
- Source: https://www.newadvent.org/fathers/3812.htm
- Text: “If anyone asserts the fabulous pre-existence of souls, and shall assert the monstrous restoration which follows from it: let him be anathema.”
- Context: The anathema targets restoration as tied to pre-existence. Whether the 15 Origenist anathemas were formally acts of the Fifth Ecumenical Council (553), or of a preceding home synod (543 / early 553), is disputed in modern scholarship: Richard Price, The Acts of the Council of Constantinople of 553 (Liverpool, 2009), discusses the dossier; New Advent (Second Council of Constantinople) notes Hefele’s view that Origen was condemned en passant in the council’s 11th canon, while the separate 15-anathema list is often treated as belonging to an earlier local synod (secondary-attested: Price; standard handbook accounts). Do not treat the 15 as uncontested ecumenical canons.
- Bears on: L5
- Status: verified (English text of anathema 1); formal conciliar status of the 15 secondary-attested / disputed
