ICO S1: Letter to Constantia

  • Text: “Are not such things banished and excluded from churches all over the world, and is it not common knowledge that such practices are not permitted to us alone?” Also: a picture said to be of Paul and the Saviour, “I took it away from her and kept it in my house … lest we appear, like idol worshippers, to carry our God around in an image.”
  • Context: Authenticity is disputed: Gero defended it; Speck and Sode (JÖByz 54, 2004) doubt a coherent original can be reconstructed (see Gwynn, GRBS 47, 2007, 227). The letter opposes depicting Christ’s glorified form and cites the second commandment for his form in the flesh.
