S1: Dialogue 11

  • Source: https://www.newadvent.org/fathers/01282.htm
  • Text: “But we do not trust through Moses or through the law” … “Abraham (who in uncircumcision was approved of and blessed by God on account of his faith, and called the father of many nations)”.
  • Context: Argues that the Mosaic covenant has been superseded by the “new law”, Christ.

S2: Dialogue 92

  • Source: https://www.newadvent.org/fathers/01287.htm
  • Text: “For Abraham was declared by God to be righteous, not on account of circumcision, but on account of faith. For before he was circumcised the following statement was made regarding him: ‘Abraham believed God, and it was accounted unto him for righteousness.’ Genesis 15:6”
  • Context: Uses the same argument from sequence as Rom 4:9–11. The point at issue is the Mosaic ordinances (circumcision, Sabbath, sacrifices). Elsewhere Justin also stresses repentance and baptism (First Apology 61, to verify in context).

Topic: baptism

BAP S1: First Apology 61

  • Source: https://www.newadvent.org/fathers/0126.htm
  • Text: “Then they are brought by us where there is water, and are regenerated in the same manner in which we were ourselves regenerated. For, in the name of God, the Father and Lord of the universe, and of our Saviour Jesus Christ, and of the Holy Spirit, they then receive the washing with water. For Christ also said, Unless you be born again, you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. John 3:5”
  • Context: Describes adult converts who first fast and pray “for the remission of their sins that are past”. Calls the washing “regenerated” and links it to John 3:5.

Topic: salvation

See salvation reasoning.

SAL S1: First Apology 43

  • Source: https://www.newadvent.org/fathers/0126.htm
  • Text: “unless the human race have the power of avoiding evil and choosing good by free choice, they are not accountable for their actions … But that it is by free choice they both walk uprightly and stumble, we thus demonstrate.”
  • Context: Written against pagan fatalism (Stoic and astrological), not against a doctrine of grace.

Topic: eucharist

EUC S1: First Apology 66

  • Source: https://www.newadvent.org/fathers/0126.htm
  • Text: “For not as common bread and common drink do we receive these; but in like manner as Jesus Christ our Saviour, having been made flesh by the Word of God, had both flesh and blood for our salvation, so likewise have we been taught that the food which is blessed by the prayer of His word, and from which our blood and flesh by transmutation are nourished, is the flesh and blood of that Jesus who was made flesh.”
  • Context: An explanation for pagan readers. He draws an analogy with the Incarnation. “By transmutation” (κατὰ μεταβολήν) refers to the digestion of the food, not to the change of the elements (Greek to verify).
  • Bears on: E1

Topic: atonement

ATN S1: Dialogue 95

  • Source: https://www.newadvent.org/fathers/01287.htm
  • Text: Editor’s heading: “Christ took upon Himself the curse due to us.” Text: “the whole human race will be found to be under a curse … the Father of all wished His Christ for the whole human family to take upon Him the curses of all”.
  • Context: Exegesis of Deut 27:26 with Gal 3:10–13. This is substitution of the curse.
