S1: On Those Who Think They Are Justified by Works
- Source: Philokalia (Athens, 1893), vol. 1, Mark the Ascetic, Περὶ τῶν οἰομένων ἐξ ἔργων δικαιοῦσθαι, ch. 2 (archive.org, Philokalia1893GreekAthens)
- Text: “οὐκ ἔστι μισθὸς ἔργων ἡ Βασιλεία τῶν Οὐρανῶν, ἀλλὰ χάρις Δεσπότου πιστοῖς δούλοις ἡτοιμασμένη” (“the kingdom of heaven is not a wage for works, but the Master’s grace prepared for faithful servants”; my translation), after citing Luke 17:10 and saying adoption was given ‘by his own blood’.
- Context: Early 5th c. (T3). Excludes works as a wage while assuming the servants are obedient: works are owed, the kingdom is grace. Supports reading B.
