Papal primacy and infallibility

In short
  • S08.1 Peter led the apostles; the Roman church held a primacy of honour and a leading role in guarding the tradition (T1–T2), without universal jurisdiction (medium)
  • S08.2 Not supported: privileges of sees were customary and regional (Nicaea 6; Chalcedon 28); Gregory the Great rejects ‘universal bishop’ (medium–high)

From the study it came from: Agree: a real Petrine and Roman prominence, but no universal jurisdiction or infallibility.

Two separate measures, shown side by side; neither is combined with the other (confidence-weighted, out of 4; counts show how many of this doctrine's 2 questions each rests on). This doctrine is second-order (tier weight 2). How scoring works · Scripture and tradition · Glossary · Every score with its citation

Origin

Plan, overall verdict and verification status of the former church-authority category (shared with the other doctrines that came from it)

Church authority and the papacy

Method and conventions: docs/conventions.md. Reasoning: church-authority reasoning. Traditions’ sources: confessional sources.

1. Plan

Questions: P1 Peter, and the church of Rome’s primacy (honour, leadership, guarding the tradition); P2 universal jurisdiction and infallibility of the bishop of Rome. Interpretive authority in general is in Scripture and tradition C3; church offices are left for a planned ordained-ministry topic. Scripture: Matt 16:18–19; Luke 22:31–32; John 21:15–17; Acts 15; Gal 2:7–14; 1 Pet 5:1. Fathers: 1 Clement 63; Ignatius, Romans, prologue; Irenaeus, Against Heresies III.3.2; Cyprian, On Unity 4; Nicaea canon 6; Chalcedon canon 28; Gregory the Great, Letter V.18. Later: Vatican I (1870); the Reformation confessions on the pope.

2. Verdicts and trace

Weighed under the source-proximity principle: Scripture first, then the father tiers T1–T4.

3. Post-750 development

4. Overall verdict

P1: Peter led the apostles and Rome held a primacy of honour and a leading role as guardian of tradition (T1–T2); denying any special place to Rome, or calling the pope Antichrist, departs from the fathers. P2: universal jurisdiction and infallibility lack early and biblical support.

5. Verification status

Vatican I, Smalcald Articles, Treatise, Art. XXXVII, WCF XXV.6 and 1689 26.4 are quoted from standard editions (not rechecked in this pass). Cyprian Unity 4 exists in two recensions; the received text was used. Constantinople I canon 3 was not found in the fetched page.
